Minimal backup

I want to backup Plex, but that's a huuuge amount of data, where most of it isn't needed. I'm not sure what it is, but most of it has to be autogenerated. I have clicked on a lot of options, but not enough to generate gigabytes of configuration data.

So what is the bare minimum to backup, so I will keep the configuration of my server and libraries? And keep restore procedure simple, something like this:

  1. Install Plex, don't configure anything
  2. Log out of Plex
  3. Shut down server
  4. Overwrite files from backup, this should only be a few megabytes
  5. Start server
  6. Log in

I would be fine with the server starting up after a restore with empty libraries. On the next update, everything will be added anyway. I don't care much about "watched" status, and my opinion is that all metadata such as titles, posters etc. should be read from storage and services. If I want to edit metadata, I do it in the filesystem. (Rename or use an .NFO file.)

I don't mind keeping these things, I just don't want gigabytes or even hundreds of megabytes of backup data.

I found one post which may answer my question, but I'm not completely sure that answer applies in my situation too: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/143488/minimal-requirements-to-move-library-onto-a-new-machine

Do you think the answer is:

  • Preferences.xml
  • Plug-in Support (Can I skip Plug-in Support/Caches?)
  • Plug-ins (Only the files I have added manually)
