[Kubuntu 16.04.1] Plex Media Server was working fine but randomly stopped - what happened?

I did not upgrade PMS or install any new versions. After going through the mess of configuring PMS to launch as the main user (how it should just be by default but for some reason isn't), and after messing around with some library permissions, I finally got it working.

I dared not touch the finicky beast once it was actually working. Time passes and various other system updates occur and some reboots and now PMS isn't working again. Why? How do I fix it?

PMS on Linux should be this easy:

  1. Install the .deb (or whatever)
  2. Run it or start the service
  3. It just works (configure it in a browser etc)
  4. I shouldn't have to make my username 'plex'
  5. I shouldn't have to mess with creating users or groups
  6. I shouldn't have to edit obscure files that PMS itself doesn't even tell you about
  7. I shouldn't have to do anything else

The whole process is unbelievably unfriendly for how simple it could and should be. On Windows it is this easy.

I was running 1.0.3 and upgraded to 1.1.4 to see if that would fix it. It didn't.
