Hi Folks,
Having a slight issue with my new Plex set-up. Been a plex member for years but finally made the jump to UNRAID for docker/kvm functionality from Server 2008 R2. While I was moving to my new house, I got lazy and just did not start the server for basically 6 months or so so maybe the licensing with Plex has changed (in regards to the "free" tier remote capabilities). I can't remember 100% if I ever connected with Plex Home Theater on Windows (to my remote Plex Server from the WAN)
Never had any remote access issues previously, but after moving to UNRAID I can't seem to get my remote access set properly. Everything is forwarded out, I can see the web GUI from the WAN, and Plex itself is reporting as "Fully Accessible Outside your Network", but I still can't get my Plex Home Theater application on my laptop to connect from the WAN. If I fire up my VPN it finds the server as soon as the application launches. I have even tried manually setting the server IP to my WAN IP (which is dynamic, but I am running No-IP dyn dns). I am signed into Plex using the same account on my Server, Web GUI, and Plex Home Theater application as well.
First; general set-up overview
**Unraid **- running Plex in Docker (host mapped port 32400, bridged to UNRAID IP). Running several other dockers and a few VM's as well. No other remote access issues (including BTSync, CrashPlan, etc). All are using host IP's with ports mapped to their docker containers.
**Firewall **- PFSense through CenturyLink GPON Gigabit Fiber. This is both my PPPoE Modem as well as Firewall/Router. NAT is set to WAN IP:32400 to forward to my LAN IP:32400, so a direct NAT. I AM running PFBlockerNG which prevents inbound requests from Non-US IP addresses (not all, but most ICANN ranges for well-known countries).
I have several VLAN's but this has never been a problem. More-so, port 32400 is 100% forwarded from my WAN IP to my Plex LAN IP at that same port, and I can stream movies from the browser with no problems. Even disabled my Windows firewall with no change.
I searched high and low but could not 100% confirm the answer - Does Plex Home Theater for Windows support remote viewing without a PlexPass subscription? It says it does on the website which is what I am going off.
I am about to give up on the issue because its not that big of a deal to either use the web GUI or VPN into my home network, but I don't think I should have to.
I am a Sysadmin by trade, so networking and virtualization are all second nature. I just can't figure out why I can't connect with PHT ~X(
