Ubuntu 12.04 UFW

Hello,

I have plex running on Ubuntu. Which ports do I need to open on the UFW to get plex working and get access to a windows cifs share?

I tried already port 80,32400, 445, 443, 137, 389 and 139.

When I turn ufw off plex is working perfect, but I'd like some extra protection.

Can you help me.

Plex Disconnects after 5-10 min of playback.

Hello,

I need some help! Got Plex Server working on Ubuntu x64, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20GHz 8GB RAM, and AndroidTv client all at the same LAN. After 5 or 10min of uninterrupted playback a message appears: "Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost".
Playback resumes perfectly fine when clicking Retry. I can also click the back button and resume from the regular interface.

What's happening? Thank you very much in advance. :)

At Server.log I found this:

Database issues reflecting user changes

I have been running plex on my debian server for quite some time and everything works wonderfully. But after recently moving to plexpass, I wanted to create a household account and move our watched states from the admin account, to the newly created house account. I have all the sql commands to do this with, but they are not affecting the database. I am thinking something may possibly be corrupted.

I have tried this both with sqlite3 cli on the debian box, as well as copying the db to my windows machine and using sqlitebrowser. The timestamp on the database .db file is never the current time, but the -shm and -wal files are always more recent. I can create a user in the plex web interface, stop the server, then open the database with on deb cli, or windows, and it will not show the recent changes to the database. I do have some backups from scheduled tasks, but I have not tried to use them yet.

What are the -shm and -wal files for, are they temp storage that is used until data gets wrote to database?

All the rest of my database seems fine, shows populate and status is kept just fine. I do have one minor issue, I have alot of my tv series that are showing trashcan icon on them, it thinks they aren't there, but when I go into show they are fine, plus shows unwatched status. Has not affected the roku players at all.

Really appreciate any help anyone may be able to offer. Thanks

openSuSE Music folder

Hello,

I have installed Plex on openSuSE. I have mounted through NFS my Music, Movies and TV series. I have added to the Plex all three. And the last two work perfectly. The music on the other hand, stayed there for 5 days. After that time, it cannot be seen anymore. I tried deleting and readding it but didn't work.

Any ideas what would it be or how i can troubleshoot it?

Thanks!

Editing "Various Artists" For Music Collection

UGH!!!!

I have all these MP3s listing the artist as "Various Artist." Whenever I go to edit the individual track to the correct artist, save changes it goes back into the library as "Various Artist."

What the heck is going on? I'm running PLEX on WD Mycloud Mirror.

New Mint 17 - first Plex worked, then mysteriously stopped

It's a new install, and I'm a teensy bit past noob with Linux systems, but I've used Mint before, and Plex works fine on my WIn7 OS. Plus, it worked fine for a few days on Mint... When I log into Plex Media Manager online, the libraries and shows are still there for my Mint server.

I've relinked my Roku to Plex via the 4-character keycode, and deleted all previous servers. [EDIT] When I try to discover servers automatically from my Roku, Windows7 will show up, but it can't find anything when my computer is running Mint. Manually adding a server at 192.168.1.2 / 32400 (checked that IP via ifconfig) times out without making contact.

[bug] HTML ISO 8859-1 code renders incorrectly in web interface when casting to Chromecast

This is a very minor bug. The HTML ISO 8859-1 code for an apostrophe (') seems to be incorrectly escaped in the web browser interface when casting to a device (in this case Chromecast). See image attached.

To reproduce:
1) Include apastrophe in Chromecast device name
2) Browse to Plex Media Server web interface
3) Connect to Chromecast
4) Play video file
5) Observe &#39 ; where ' expected

Custom SSL on Ubuntu with Nginx

I know this has been asked a bunch of times but I can't seem to find a thread that actually has an answer. I'm currently running Nginx and have Plex on https://mydomain.com:32400/web/ except when I get to the https:// it still has Plex's invalid certificate. In the server settings, I put https://mydomain.com:32400, https://mydomain.com/plex and it still doesn't seem to prefer using my certificate over Plex's. I have the green lock when I go to mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com so I know SSL is working but can't seem to get it working for Plex.

Any idea?

It seems that plex.js is not working correctly on IE11.
It does not populate the dashboard properly, nor the folders.
Some folders are populated and some is not.

In Firefox all folders and the dashboard is populated.

inotify and automatic library updates (again)

$

Hello, I think I have seen this question raised before. But is there some real conclusion made regarding why PMS seems to have issues with detecting media library updates through its inotify implementation for VFS?
I have some media stored on a NAS, mounted using SMB, and on top of that a FUSE file system. It is the VFS that PMS is redirected to. I can understand if a pure network file system have issue with reporting updates properly for the kernel to detect file system events, but...as the VFS in mounted on top of that I see no reason why it should not work.
In fact, I tested it using inotify_tools with any issues what so ever. Any changes made to the VFS mount point is detected by e.g. inotifywait. This inotify test was running on the same server as PMS. So why does it seem like PMS does not detect changes made to the mount point? Does it have anything to do with what user is subscribing to the inotify events? That I have not yet tested. I tested it as root. But should it really matter?

[BUG] External subtitles unavailable on folders with many files

Hello, I found the strangest bug with PMS. If a folder has over 100 or so video files, each with an srt file, PMS will not detect the external subtitle file. If you move the files to a sub-folder with less than 100 files, it suddenly starts detecting the srts again. Is there a work around or will a fix be issued?

Restrict Plex Transcode Stream to one cpu core

$

Typically if you have a decent cpu then one transcode stream can be handled by one core. I have noticed in the past that one stream can light up 6 or 7 of my available cpu threads unnecessarily. Only one cpu thread is typically needed to transcode one stream, and restricting a transcoding job leaves the server with some cpu cycles for other things. I have written a script to adjust the xml profiles in Plex so that one cpu thread is used when transcoding.

After each plex server upgrade I was manually adjusting the xml profiles, and it got to be a pain, so I wrote a script to do it quickly.

The script will also backup the original files in case you want to put things back to the defaults. Attaching my script to this post, feedback is welcome.

I have not tested this script on Windows, Mac, BSD, etc, but it should work properly if you change one line to point it to correct directory.

Local subtitles not seen

$

This is probably a simple problem, but I'm new to Plex so I'd appreciate some help

I have a folder with some episodes of a french tv series. Each episode has a matching external subtitle file (in the same folder). I have ticked "Local Media Assets" in Settings->Plex Media Server->Agents, and made sure it's top of the list. The naming convention for the subtitle file is correct, I think. - "ProgramName.S01E01.en.srt", for example.

I control Plex remotely via the Android app. If I chose an episode, and cast it to a Chromecast, it plays perfectly, but without subtitles. If I go into Settings, and look at Subtitles (CC in a square speech bubble icon), there aren't any.

Where am I going wrong?

Temporary Folder issues

I am running my Plex server on raspberry pi2

I had some issues with Apple TV playback earlier and I posted on the forums and got response which helped with the issue. The solution was to offload the temporary transcoding folder to a hard drive as there is more space.

This worked perfectly for a while but now having issues with this folder. Plex sometimes uses it and other times it seems it does not. When it does not use it playback wont begin and I have to restart the server, but this does not always solve the issue.

I have to remove the folder location in plex settings to start playback but this results in previous issue I had on apple TV that playback would stop after 20 or so minutes.

what would be causing the sudden issue of using the folder on the external hard drive? Plex can sometime write to it but other times it does not.

thank you

Change what user Plex runs as

I am slowly working on getting my home lab over to using LDAP (Zentyal server specifically). My media is hosted on a FreeNAS system and I want to have Plex run as a specific user on my Ubuntu server. This user will be a LDAP user. I know there are a few ways to accomplish this.

1) Change the UID on my Plex server to match the LDAP UID

2) Map the UIDs on my Plex server (LDAP UID == Plex UID)

3) Change which user Plex runs as

Which is the best way to do it?  I think #3 would be best but I am not sure how to accomplish it.

PMS - Roku 2xs Issues

$

Since the upgrade to the Roku and PMS I am having issues whereby I need to reboot the server daily to restore service. If I watch 3-4 shows back to back then the server / client slows to a crawl and starts erroring with "video unavailable" until I again reboot the server. It takes minutes to select a show, then again to select an episode but the buffering time is normal. Depending on the size of the show / movie it can sometimes time-out in the middle and I have to switch to direct play to restart.

I have checked the crash logs as well as the PMS logs and neither show an obvious cause [the former being blank]

We use several IOS clients and the Roku. All seem to be affected by the issues and this has only been the case since I upgraded the PMS version.

I am running:

Debian 7.9
PMS Version 0.9.12.19

plex@Plex:~$ cat /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 8308216 kB
MemFree: 7710444 kB

plex@Plex:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep processor | wc -l

plex@Plex:~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep cpu

Already removed completely , using those steps:
1)Run
sudo apt-get purge plexmediaserver

2) Remove bulk of plex files
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/plexmediaserver

3) Remove plex user (very important!)
sudo userdel plex

4) Remove both /etc/init/plexmediaserver.conf and /etc/default/plexmediaserver
sudo rm /etc/init/plexmediaserver.conf
sudo rm /etc/default/plexmediaserver

And installed all over again without success.

Thinking of building a HTPC for Plex

$
0
0

Hi,

this is my first post here, sorry if this is a FAQ, but I did search the forum for similar questions. I am considering replacing my old Xtreamer Prodigy for something with a lot more functionality and I've come across Plex.

My home setup:
1- DLNA capable TV;
2- Projector with HDMI cable;
3- Old 5.1 amplifier with optical and coax inputs near (1) and (2);
4- Old TV with Chromecast;
5- Several Windows PCs;
6- Several Android smartphones.

I am thinking of building a Linux based HTPC, cheap and with low power consumption and after some looking around I think this might be it:

  • ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+ motherboard
  • AMD A-Series A4-5300 Dual-core
  • 4GB DDR3-1600 Memory
  • 120 GB SSD for Linux
  • 5 TB HD for media

My plans are:

1- Using the HTPC both as the Plex Media Server and Home Theater system.
Questions:
1.1- Is this something that is normally done? Are there known issues for using the same Linux box for both functions? Will the HW suffice?
1.2- What Home Theater SW would you recommend? It seems that Plex Home Theater for Linux is not officially supported, are there known limitations? Are Kodi and Plex a good match? (in the same Linux box, I mean)
1.3- I have only HD devices, but from the motherboard specs I see it is capable of 4K HD resolution. If I ever buy a 2K or 4K HD device will I have enough CPU to render at that resolution?

2- I am thinking of placing the HTPC near the DLNA TV, projector and 5.1 amplifier, so that I can connect the audio via SPDIF to the amplifier and the video via HDMI to the projector.
Questions:
2.1- The motherboard supports 7.1 audio, the amplifier has 5.1 audio. Is it possible to (easily) configure 5.1 audio on a 7.1 motherboard in Linux?

3- The other devices will access the Plex Media Server via Gigabit LAN and WiFi.
Questions:
3.1- With an AMD A-Series A4-5300 Dual-core will I be able to render to 2 devices simultaneously?
3.2- Can every family member have a different list of "already watched media" for the same Plex Media Server?
3.3- Can I have 2 or more movie libraries on the same Plex Media Server? Movies, children movies, my home made movies...

Many thanks for your input.

Regards,

Paulo
