Plex Server Migration (Windows -> Linux)

$

My son pulled the plug on my PC and actually managed to cause catastrophic Windows failure. I was able to pull the databases off the drive and I decided this would be a good excuse to scrap Windows. I now have a working Plex server in Ubuntu 17 with my libraries linked and streaming. Initially, it fought (failed to save) the new library mount points, but it did work. However, they have no cover art and the server won't accept settings changes. Everything is already plex:plex, but is there something I should edit regarding permissions? Perhaps I would need to modify a table in the database? I'd really rather not throw out the viewing history.

Ubuntu - Migrated Plex Install to new server, re-analyzing entire library?

Hi,

I just migrated my Plex install. I kept the same dir structure, paths etc, copied /var/lib/plexmediaserver and now when scanning a section it performs background analysis on EVERY file.

What gives? Database and file structure and directory path hasn't changed and the logs say as much (Streams didn't change in analysis, not saving.) etc.

What gives? Is there any way I can trick Plex into thinking everything is okay with current files and not do this? I am afraid it is now going to do this every time I do a Library Scan. This is pretty taxing on my system.

Thanks for any help!

Urgent help. No play back on any devices.

Hello there,
I'm hoping to get some expert help. For years plex media server has been running beautifully on my HP proliant n40l server via openmediavault. I have just made the mistake of updating the plex plugin and I seem to have corrupted the install. I have tried everything to fix it to no avail. Instead of reinstalling openmediavault and plex from scratch I have gone down the docker route and installed linuxserver plex container.
The install has been successful, I have managed run the docker container, log into plexmediaserver and to rescan my libraries.
However, I simply cannot play back any videos on any of my devices, including via a web browser on the network, iphone, ipad and my raspberry pi.

On my iphone and web browsers there is an error
"playback was terminated by the server, conversion failed, the transcoder crashed". I can't understand this error as I normally never transcode and run my movies via direct play or stream.

If there is a log file I should add please let me know.
Many thanks

George

[Ubuntu Server 17.04] Running PMScanner Commands from CLI Result in Error

I am running PMS 1.9.6.4401.

I was trying to look to see if from the cli you can run commands and get if there's an active stream. I came along this Article for Plex Media Scanner via Command Line. Sure that's not what I originally intended but I have another use for it.

Anyways, I tried running some of the commands testing it out and it has raised an error:
I tried running:

user@MediaServer:/usr/lib/plexmediaserver$ /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex\ Media\ Scanner -l (to get a list of media?)

and it resulted in the following error:

/usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Scanner: error while loading shared libraries: libboost_atomic.so.1.59.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I have checked the PMServer/Scanner log file and there has been no addition to it when running the commands.

Is it just a missing file or some other issue?

Update Plex Problem

Hello

in every update from Plex the File "/lib/systemd/system/plexmediaserver.service" will be updated...

in this File i changed the line:

Environment="PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_APPLICATION_SUPPORT_DIR=/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support"
to
Environment="PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_APPLICATION_SUPPORT_DIR=/home/plex_data/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support"

in Case, my /var/ location has not enough free space for the Files...

Every Update i had to rewrite the File, is it possible to make this line persistent? Is there some settings i didn't see?

plexmediaserver ubuntu/debian9 regressions (disableremotesecurity and whitelisting not working) !

Hello
I have upgraded my linux server which was version 1.5.7.4016 on debian 9.
i upgraded to the last version and here is the big issues i have noticed.

  • you have mispelled the last package version you have inverted the 7 and the 5 in the name of the package. how can a server go from 1.5.7 to 1.7.5 in one month ?
  • parameter disableRemoteSecurity="1" in Preferences.xml do not work anymore so we cannot connect remotely without user authentification. I prefere public ip address authentification in allowed networks, without putting a username or password.

Could you please fix the disableRemotesecurity making it work again if the value is equal to 1.

I was obliged to downgrade to version back to 1.5.7.4016 which was the previous version before 1.7.5.4035

thanks a lot and have a nice day

DVR Tuner not working, cannot re-add it

Hello,

I have the HDHomeRun tuner and it has been working with Plex since the earliest days of the beta. Recently, the Plex server stopped displaying the availability of the tuner. I noticed it a few weeks ago but am only now investigating the issue.

It's kind of important to me to make this work since I'm located in Houston and want to let my family and friends see the local news channels for important information for those without power but have phones during Hurricane Harvey.

I have tested the tuner using both Silicon Dust's Windows client and visiting the tuner directly in the browser, and with the Windows 10 app. In all cases, the tuner is working fine and I can watch my local TV stations.

Plex, however, refuses to see it. I suspect something is amiss with my Plex database or something. I removed it from Plex and was going to re-add it, but it is never discovered and if I put in the IP address manually, nothing happens.

In the Plex Media Server.log file, I see this each time I try to manually add it:

Aug 27, 2017 13:44:12.811 [0x7f32fbbff700] INFO - DVR:Grabber: The device was already discovered at http://192.168.210.132, updating URI

So Plex seems to think it is still installed and configured, but this is not the case at all.

How can I force Plex to re-add this device? Is there something in the database I need to flip, is there a .conf file somewhere that is lying about the current state, or is there something else going on here?

How to upgrade Plex Server on CentOS minimal?

Hi guys,

I made some research in the forums and didn't found an article, tutorial or anything that helps me out Update my Plex Server running on CentOS 7 minimal. I remember on Windows was as easy as click a button but on Linux I'm guessing I have to run the .rpm package installation on top of the existing one? remove the actual one and do a fresh install?

Will be nice to have an official tutorial of how to update the server considering that there are updates for the server almost every week.

After many days I finally finished setup my server on CentOS minimal, so, have a crash and have to rebuild the whole thing will be a huge bummer, so thats why im trying to find something official or proven that works, and not just a blog someone else wrote many versions ago in another website.

I appreciate any help

Automatically switch PC Off/On

So I've previously been a Mythtv backend Kodi Frontend user but I wanted to try Plex as the overall experience seems better.

My Mythtv Backend would automatically switch itself on/off for scheduled recordings or if I used Kodi from my TV it would turn on the PC using Wake On Lan. It basically meant the backend would only be on when required instead of running 24x7.

Is there anything similar for Plex? I won't need to worry about turning on/off for recordings as this is all handled by a separate Raspberry Pi/NAS. So I'd only need the Plex server to switch on/off when I'm using Kodi (I have the Plex add on installed).

Remote access briefly available and then unavailable

Due to the way my apartment is designed I have to use remote access to make use of my plex server. I have two internet connections as as my TV cable provider (Astro - Malaysia) provides an internet connection (ISP is 'Time.Net')

I think that initially remote access was working from the original installation of Plex on my win10 Desktop, however it is not working now but I can connect indirectly but this seems a little unstable.

The port forwarding, on my ISP (Maxis - Malaysia) supplied router requires the following parameters:

Local IP / Local Port From / Local Port To / Protocol(Both/TCP/UDP) / Remote IP / Remote Port From / Remote Port To
192.168.0.106 / 32400 / 32400 / Both / 121.121.59.145 / 32400 / 32400

There is also an interface parameter which is currently set to 'Any'.

As shown above, I tried to set this up using informantion shown in Plex and the public port number 32400 and Plex shows:
Private 192.168.0.106 : 32400 < Public 121.121.59.145 : 32400 Internet X

I manually specified port 32400

There is a green arrow next to the Private IP/Port and a red X next to the Public - but the meaning of these symbols is not clear to me.

When I neable remote access the message briefly flashes green and available but then reverts to red and unavailable.

I am at a complete loss as to what is causing the issue, could it be my ISP?

Jon Evan-Cook

Feature Request on the Media Server

Two thing would be nice in Media Server.
1) Can you add reports so we can track what our friends have watched?
2) When friends are playing my media and I need to shutdown/restart Plex, can we have the ability to send a message to people that appears LIKE a "subtitle burn in" so they know it's about to happen and we can say when it will be back online?

Can we get more access to edit the metadata for titles. In particular - the CAST would be nice (and helpful).

I've ticked the "use hardware acceleration when available" checkbox

But still not getting the (hw) when it's playing.

Is there any way to tell why not?

Plex Media Server Not Seeing External Hard Drive

I am running Plex Media Server 0.9.8.1 on Ubuntu 12.04.  I have my movies on the local hard drive and tv shows on an external drive.  The MS sees the movies on the local drive just fine and they all show up in the library.  I am not able to see any of the tv shows on the external drive.  Any ideas on how to add these or why they may not be appearing?

Currently I'm running Plex on an old Mac Mini. I'm thinking of moving to a new machine and running CentOS 7. My issue is I plan on running my server headless and for the life of me can not figure how to have a gui remote connection to the server. My machine for administration of the Linux host will be a Mac. Thanks in advance for any help.

HW encoding lost in 1.9.7

Debian Stretch + Xeon 1225v2 (Quicksync)

I just noticed, after installing lastest 1.9.7-4460 an increase in my CPU usage. After a quick search, i can't see the second (hw) in the activity page. I have the first (hw) for decoding though.

I just downgraded to 1.9.6-4429 and hardware encoding is back.

Server locking up lately - Version 1.9.7.4460 - frozen on re-scanning Photo library.

Over the last couple weeks, my PMS has locked 7 or 8 times. I'll try to access it with a Roku and it says "loading" but just spins forever. Once or twice it happened while watching a movie - the buffering icon came on screen and never progressed.

Restarting PMS does nothing, it requires a full reboot of the server to get it going again - which I don't like. Headless Ubuntu 12.04 server and PMS 1.9.7.4460, been running PMS (paid version) on this server since 2014.

When I log into the server from a PC using the web access, it loads initially but show the Photos library as updating (I haven't added anything lately). After a bit, it spits out an error message. Last time I killed the process and restarted it -which does nothing, but I noticed a lot of files still open (using lsof) by plex even when it was stopped.

Another oddity, when I log back in to Plex using the browser AFTER the reboot, I get a message that I'm accessing the server via a "Relay.." which I've never seen before and really don't even know what that means. I guess that I'm going outside my network to the internet to log into the server. My server and PC are on the same network. If I log out and back in - it does not appear the second time.

I couldn't see anything in the logs that looked meaningful so I activated verbose logging just to see what it produces. I see now why they say NOT to do that! I'm going to reboot it again and wait for another lockup to collect logs.

This all began after the last update to PMS so maybe it's a version problem. However, I was playing around with the wifi on my server PC a while back and had forgotten to disable the interface when I was done messing with it. Doesn't seem like this would be related but I thought I should mention it.

At this point I'm wondering if other are having similar experience or if I should be looking into something specific.

Packaging improvements for Fedora

I downloaded the Fedora 64bit installer but I don't blindly install things from 3rd parties...

Looking through the contents I see everything is installed to /usr/lib... For 64bit RPM based distributions, the correct location is /usr/lib64.

Also, it looks like both a SysV init file and a SystemD service file are provided... Since SystemD is used on all supported Fedora versions and CentOS 7, the init.d file should be dropped...

As a Fedora packager I could help with this but of course someone on the Plex side would have to be interested.

Thanks,
Richard

Plex Live TV continues to choke with quad-core chip

$

I previously tried to set up Plex Live TV on my legacy Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz (E6400) system, but realized it did not pass the Passmark test. So I bought a Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz (Q6600) chip off eBay (and Linux Mint recognizes the chip as a Core 2 Quad). When I tested the new chip (which has an average Passmark score of near 3000), I noticed that Plex continued to choke on the transcoding. As an alternate I downloaded a TV-streaming app called Me TV, and its CPU usage for a 1080p stream dropped from 70% (with the E6400) to 20% (with the Q6600). This makes me think that the problem is with the Plex software, unless Me TV does not transcode to H.264. Has anyone else experienced this?
