I'm running Mageia 6 sta1 on my desktop machine and I'm trying to install Plex Media server 1.0.0 on it. But during installation, I run into issues. Below is the exact error:

Afp share unbuntu 14.10

Hello everybody,

My name is Peter. I come from Marseille France. So excuse me for my english :). And I send to you a lot of sun :)

Context:

I have installed long time ago ubuntu 14.10 on a pc. On this pc , I put 4 disk where i store all my media. With my Imac, I'm actualy accessing at there folders with afp protocol beacause i had some trouble with smb protocol in the past. I followed this tutorial and it's working great:

https://missingreadme.wordpress.com/2010/05/08/how-to-set-up-afp-filesharing-on-ubuntu/

Yesterday, i installed Plex media server on ubuntu 14.10, ( just download package eand launch the *.deb packages ) but when i add the path for my films (who is on the local computer but on another disk, not on the system disk), i can't see anything in the plex library.

I'm pretty sure the reaseon is plex does not support afp share.

Question:

1/Am I right?
2/How can I do for add afp support on an existing Plex install?

Thank you

Several Plex issues after PMS update

$

Hi, a few weeks ago I updated my PMS on my Raspberry Pi 2B with Raspbian running on it. After that update, connecting via the web browser doesn't work anymore. But with the app on my phone I can actually connect. Unfortunately also the movie posters are gone and replaced with a random scene in the movie.

In the folders of the PMS, I noticed that the start.sh script, which used to be located in /usr/lib/plexmediaserver, were now moved to /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources. Besides that, PMS started automatically after my RPI restart, while I used to start PMS manually with the start.sh script. Now when I stop PMS, and try to restart it via the start.sh script in the new folder, it says it can't find "Plex Media Server."

Now I found some sort of solution to this problem, I copied the start.sh script back to the old location: /usr/lib/plexmediaserver. Now I can actually run PMS and connect to it with the webbrowser and also the movie posters are fixed again. But this solution is quite inconvenient because when I start my server, I first have to stop the automatic running PMS manually, and after that running the start.sh script.

Is there a proper solution to this problem?

Can you use any Deb based Distro?

I've been looking around and reading about different distros and I'm wondering if PMS will work on any that is .deb based. I was originally planning on just using Ubuntu but I didn't want to restrict myself to that one. It's going to go on a new Intel Nuc and although Ubuntu would work I was try to find something that might be more lightweight, something like Peppermint OS. I'm brand new to Linux so any distro will involve a learning curve. It's going to be running PMS and also rutorrent with filebot amc.

There's also a bunch of other Ubuntu versions as well isn't there? Things like Cinnamon, but aren't they just GUI changes?

Anyway, can PMS be installed on any .deb based distro in the same was as Ubuntu? Also, does this work with other applications? If it comes in a Ubuntu version then it will work on another .deb distro?

Would Ubuntu be fine as it is or would you recommend anything else, particularly anything lightweight.

Thanks for any tips everyone!

Issues with the recent systemd changes and Chromecast

So, after fixing the mess that last weeks update caused for my existing systemd integration, Plex has completely stopped working with my 2nd gen wired Chromecast. At first, casting was very fast, but not it simply won't work for any video. On my Nexus 6, I get a popup "Failed to play on ", and on the TV it just shows "unable to cast This media is currently unavailable". It plays just fine in browser, and on the phone and via Streama.

What gives? The debug logs shows nothing happening when I attempt to cast a video to the Chromecast, and I don't see anything that even sounds remotely like an error - the errors popping up on my phone and on the TV aren't showing up in the log, which is also perplexing considering I have debug logging enabled. My next step is going to be to trash this Plex install and reinstall, which I'd really prefer not to do because my library is several TB in size and cleaning up the metadata for random videos is not my idea of a good time.

Plex Media Server Update Automation (Download Page URL Change)

Hello,

I see that Plex just reached the 1.0 step, kuddos people \o/
However I'm now facing an issue which is the plex media server update automation

Indeed I'm using an awesome script PlexUpdate (https://github.com/mrworf/plexupdate/) which automates through cron the server update without any hassle

However within the script we have 3 links which seems to have been updated now.
I've tried to look for the updated version but all I see now is drop down menus and what not, which makes it a bit difficult to locate :

URL_LOGIN=https://plex.tv/users/sign_in
URL_DOWNLOAD=https://plex.tv/downloads?channel=plexpass
URL_DOWNLOAD_PUBLIC=https://plex.tv/downloads

Is it possible to have the news links if there are some ?
Thanks in advance for your help

Sincerely,

Mawuena

PMS Version 1.0.0.2261, Plex Web 2.7.0, playlist not showing IE 11

Hallo,

I am running a PMS on Debian 7.11. Recently I upgraded it to PMS version 1.0.0.2261.

Today I noticed a problem with my playlists. On my PC using I.E 11.

I cannot display the playlists by selecting them from the libraries menu on the left nor the dropdown at the top of the screen. The screen goes blank and the orange spinner is showing.

They partially show up on the dash board and I can start playing them but it is not possible to open them and select titles from it.

Plex Web is version 2.7.0.

The playlists are showing on the server itself in iceweasle and on my Samsung TV.

Any hint on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Import Itunes Playlist

$

0

Hi everyone,

I've been using PMS for a while now. I started out on my Windows desktop and later converted to an Ubuntu server. On my desktop I had no issues importing my music playlists as both PMS, iTunes and my music collection were on the same computer.

Due to circumstances I recently had to reinstall my ubuntu server again and didn't think about my playlists all too well. I simple had in the back of my head I could simply import it from iTunes.
Boy was I wrong!

Searching PMS forums and google gave pretty much similar results, that everyone was struggling with importing iTunes playlists (al be it mostly out-dated, say 2012-2015) and no solution was found. Nonetheless I kept trying.
Now, I do not know if this is already public knowledge as I myself could not (easily) find it, so I am posting this in the hope to contribute to the community.

[PROBLEM]

As this solution worked for me, does not mean it works for everyone else, OS or configuration. So I'll describe my problem and solution as elaborate as I can.

My setup:

  • NAS with all my music collection
** music collection is shared to my PLEX server.
  • PLEX server (running mainly PLEX, separate server).
  • Desktop (which runs iTunes)

Problem 1: PMS does not know where my iTunes Library is saved.
Problem 2: PMS is not very clear when it comes to iTunes Playlists (more below).
Problem 3: iTunes stores information on where your music is located (Windows-location).

[SOLUTION]

Problem 1 & 2
Importing an iTunes playlists without configuring your PMS will result in the following error:

This means, that PMS is looking in either its basic directory (if it has any) or simply does not know where to look. THUS a "problem" occurred.

So we need to specify where to look.
1. Go to your PMS website (i.e. http://localhost:32400/web/index.html)
2. go to Settings (top right corner)
3. select the Server tab
4. click "Show advanced" (right below the server tab)
5. click on "channels"
6. check the "Enable iTunes channel" option.
7. Next we need to provide a "PATH" to the XML file location.
NOTE, PMS says "iTunes library XML path" but it actually means the file itself. normally when you are asked to provide a PATH you will give something like "C:/users/<username>/my documents" but in PMS' case, it means the following: "C:/<foldername>/itunesplaylist.xml". As seen below:

9. we have now specified the location of our iTunes playlist XML file and can restart PMS

If we try to import the playlist now, it would just return an empty screen. PMS says that it is successful but most likely you wont see any playlists.

Problem 3
This has nothing to do with PMS, but rather with the information that iTunes stores. in order to import the playlist to PMS, PMS needs to know where all the files are located as stated in the playlist.
2. export your iTunes libary/playlist
3. edit it with your favorite editor (i.e.: Notepad)
4. all we need to look for is the following text:

NOTE the text will most likely be different for everyone, as the location, folders and songs will be different for everyone.
As you can see, the location of the file is located on the localhost (the computer which iTunes is installed on), the "D:" -drive, folder "music" etc.
5. in order for PMS to know where the file is located for PMS, we need to alter the following: file://localhost/D:/music/ TO file://localhost/<location_of_music_collection_on_PMS/
Here is a example:
FROM:

TO:

In my case, to PMS, my music collection is in /mnt/music.
6. Do this for the whole document by using the replace function (in Notepad or Word this is CTRL+H)
7. Be mindful of your directory structure. it is easy to just replace everything, but different directories might require different replace-text.
8. Save the edited playlist to the location specified in PMS
9. now import your playlist in PMS

That is all I needed to do to import my iTunes playlist in PMS. It requires some work but luckily you can use the replace function which speeds things up.

TO DO (maybe)

  • will this work on every kind of setup? i.e. Windows, Debian, Mac OS X etc.

PMS 1.0.2.2413 fails to start

Centos 7.2.1511
I just upgraded the server to the latest version. after the install i run the usual command to start the service but it fails saying:

Job for plexmediaserver.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status plexmediaserver.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

so i run those 2 and get this:

plexmediaserver.service - Plex Media Server for Linux
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/plexmediaserver.service; enabled; vendor preset: disabled)
Drop-In: /etc/systemd/system/plexmediaserver.service.d

Journal -xe is blank, there are no entries. I looked into that result start limit bit and it seems like the service is blocked from starting too oon? but i don't know how to force it. i tried rolling back the update in yum but that failed too, probably because I don't have the old rpm anywhere

[Fedora 24] plexmediaserver.service fails to start

I just installed plexmediaserver 0.9.16.6.1993-5089475 onto a fresh Fedora 24 Server. It fails to start using systemd with:

Jun 20 21:44:50 meerkat sh[29051]: /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex Media Server: error while loading shared libraries: libboost_system.so.1.59.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Jun 20 21:44:50 meerkat systemd[1]: plexmediaserver.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=127/n/a

I edited plexmediaserver.service to print the env before attempting to execute Plex Media Server. For some reason, LD_LIBRARY_PATH isn't getting exported through the Environment= statement within the Unit. As you can see here:

Jun 20 21:44:50 meerkat sh[29051]: SHELL=/sbin/nologin

Jun 20 21:44:50 meerkat systemd[1]: plexmediaserver.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=127/n/a

I verified this by changing the ExecStart= statement to /bin/sh -c 'LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/plexmediaserver /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Plex\ Media\ Server'. Then the service starts successfully.

I'm not sure if this is a change in systemd that ships with Fedora or not.

Upgrade from 1.0.0.2261 to 1.0.2.2413 causes nginx reverse proxy failure

After the upgrade when I go to the web address I get the standard plex cannot connect to server message. I dpkg -i back to 1.0.0 and everything starts working again. I reinstall 1.0.2 everything breaks. Back to 1.0.0 everything works. Note: I am not changing any configuration settings, the server just stops allowing requests. If I go onto my local network and go directly to the server at port 32000 everything works. Any ideas? I have been pouring through the logs and everything looks like it is working up till the /player/ command.

Unavailable outside your local network

Hello there,

Since I re-installed my dedicated debian 8 box hosted from https://www.harmony-hosting.com I can't get my plex server be available from outside my local.

Usually I do :

  • Remove plex : sudo dpkg -r plexmediaserver

  • Reset config : sudo rm -rf /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server

  • Reinstall : sudo dpkg -i plexmediaserver_(1.0.0.2261-a17e99e_amd64.deb
  • I configure my putty to locally access my server using tunneling.

First time I access server (http://127.0.0.2/web/index.html), everything ok, first config screen appear, then I activate remote.
Once remote activated it says : Unavailable outside the local network

If I refresh the page, the server is no more found anymore, still on 127.0.0.2 and I'm forced to reinstall and erase config like above to be able to see server config tab.

From outside, same results, server not found.

Software Firewall (iptables) everything is currently opened, material firewall same, accessible from

Using latest plex 1.02... don't work too but this time asking to update server program, but it's already the latest.

I can't find anyway how to make plex work online, some help could be great. Tks.

July 18th version killed my plex media server...DEADe

Here is the version of Ubuntu I'm running:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise

First off, I installed Plex Media Server on this machine YEARS ago. I maintained updates and everything ran exceptionally smooth until the July 18th update.

I installed it, rebooted, and nothing Plex Media Server worked. I couldn't get to it via port 32400 both remotely or locally. My Rokus failed to connect.

I tried a lot and failed so I completely purged PMS and reinstalled.

I still get nothing. I can't even remotely configure the server as when browsing to http://127.0.0.1:32400/web, I get an "Unable to connect" error.

I tried to look at the logs but no log files have been created.

Any clues on what happened and how to fix?

I just upgraded to Plex Server Version 1.0.2.2413. I am running Linux Mint 17.3. The drive where all my files are located is an external HDD formatted ext4.

As soon as I upgraded, my server Dashboard was empty. In attempting to add my folders back, When I click on Browse, I can see the root of the HDD, but I cannot see the folders on the HDD which contain my videos. This setup worked flawlessly in every version of Plex prior to the July 18 update.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Plex Media Server 1.0.2.2413 ESXi 6.0 U2, frequent NMI events occurring

$

I'm running Plex Media Server 1.0.2.2413 in a virtual machine on ESXi 6.0 U2 (HPE customised image), running on a Microserver Gen8. I've been running Plex on ESXi for a while now and everything has been great.

More recently however there have been various NMI events being generated causing the entire hypervisor to stop. Reviewing coredumps, it appears that they are specifically related to the Plex Media Server Virtual machine instance, and potentially being triggered by something within the VM, though I'm not sure what.

CentOS Linux release 7.2.1511 (Core)
Kernel version is 3.10.0-327.22.2.el7.x86_64

All packages up to date and has plenty of hard drive space. Libraries are actually stored on another file server which this machine access via SMB.

Here is an example of the coredump from ESXi, so far there have been three events like this within the past week. I'm no expert with coredumps and such, but I was wondering if any other ESXi users out there could assist or further troubleshoot.

auto download missing trailers from idmb for all movies in collection

$

Took all night to script this, but here it is:

#!/bin/bash
# downloads all missing trailers - it goes through all your movies and matchs them up with an entry
# in plex, grabs the imdb id from plex, and then parses the trailer url from the imdb site, then passes
# that to youtube-dl to download the trailer, it skips entries that dont have a matching imdb entry
# or if the trailer already exists
# must have 'sqlite3' and 'youtube-dl' packages (apt-get install sqlite3 youtube-dl)
# set 'mpath' and 'pms' accordingly

Updated the script to cache the list of movies that have an IMDB ID , but no Video ID was found on the IMDB site, meaning there is no trailer for it.   Also added searching the trailers afterwords for .aspx files and rename them accordingly to .mp4 or .flv depending on what type of video they really are.  Many of the videos downloaded as .mp4, but some downloaded as .aspx and this is a small fix to rename the .aspx files.

[Gentoo Linux][Bug] TVDB Agent not working

It seems that since 1.0.2 update the TVDB Agent is not working properly.
In fact when TVDB Agent tries to downloads data if first contacts plex.tv servers which responds with 404.
With version 1.0.0 I have no problem with TVDB Agent.
Current version of Plex Media Server is: 1.0.2.2413

Having problems with Channels

Hi, I've just started looking at using Plex on my custom NAS. I'm running OpenMediaVault (Stone Burner) and it appears teh recommendatiosn are towards PMS. Before I go and purchase the app or Plex Pass, I wanted to make sure it could do what I needed.

So far it looks pretty good, but my biggest hurdle is that I can't seem to get a TvHeadEnd Channel working. I've tried both from the forum here, but the Next Generation one looks simple has both channels and recordings so I wanted to stick to tht one. I installed it and also can see and use the Channel in PMS, but when I go to view a TV channel or play a recording, I just get :

There was a problem playing this item.

I checked the logs, and it appears these are in there, but I don't know what that might mean or how to fix it:

Jul 23, 2016 19:04:05.002 [0x7fcc37bff700] ERROR - [Transcoder] http://127.0.0.1:32400/video/tvheadend-ng/PlayMedia?url=/stream/channel/26c13a2d153c905031f820aa86853520?profile=pass&amp;X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx: End of file
Jul 23, 2016 19:04:05.003 [0x7fcc393fe700] ERROR - Failed to start session successfully.
Jul 23, 2016 19:04:05.003 [0x7fcc42bff700] ERROR - JobManager: child process returned: 1 (Operation not permitted)
Jul 23, 2016 19:09:00.260 [0x7fcc37bff700] ERROR - [Transcoder] [mpeg2video @ 0x1c66e00] Invalid frame dimensions 0x0.

Is this is TVHeadEnd issue, or a problem witht he Channel, or something else I've stuffed up? If anyone could give me a headsup, that would be great. I can watch my recordings/TV on Kodi, but there is no Chromecast support like with Plex, so I'd really like to use PLex.

I'm also having problems with the Unsupported App Store channel, so it's probable I'm doing something wrong.

Less of a question than a "this worked for me" - downgrade from 1.0.0.2261 to 0.9.16.6 fixed qnap

I was having issues with some/most videos stuttering, but some working properly, and this is after a long period of near perfection using mostly the same library. Problems occurred using the LG plex client, fire HD plex client, xbox one plex client, and clients on both iphone and ipad (ios).

misdirection: This lead me to believe there may be filesystem problems, a failing drive, or a failing RAID. After messing around with the qnap (TS-253A) filesystem utilities - garbage (it can't even unmount the filesystem to do a check, long story), decided was nearly impossible to recover from, so freshly reinstalled and formatted everything, built RAID from scratch, decided to download stuff again. SAME ISSUE STILL.

TLDR: concluded plex was the culprit of the sudden stuttering on a wide variety of types of media, downgraded plex media server from 1.0.0.2261 to 0.9.16.6 got it working perfectly again.

i hope this was not already discussed, at least i couldn't find anything which would solve my problem.

i'm trying to install a new plex server on CentOS 7, a fresh minimal installation.
the problem i have is that the service is not starting. please see below output od systemctl status and journalctl -xe.

hope someone can give me an idea whats going wron here since i like to move my corrent installation from my NAS to a dedicated server.

systemctl status plexmediaserver.service
