Ubuntu Repo

I upgrade plex server today on my Ubuntu 64 bit server and it asked what to do a modified file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list
I told it to update it with the developer's info and then took a look at the file and discovered there was a plex repo. All this time I had been manually downloading the .deb installation file and upgrading it myself.

My question is how can I tell the repo to use the plex pass channel for downloads instead of the regular public one?

I tried signing out on the devices and the server and signing back in. still no luck. I uninstalled the 1.3 deb and reinstalled 1.2.7 but I still can't access the server remote. Please help! thanks :D

Thanks

0.9.16 to 0.9.17 upgrade issues, start.sh, server settings, ubuntu/debian packages

First, it looks like the start.sh file has been moved from /usr/lib/plexmediaserver to /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources ... I confirmed this by comparing the plexmediaserver_0.9.17.2.2159-2bd156c_amd64 to plexmediaserver_0.9.16.0.1754-23623fb_amd64 deb files after extracting them.

_Can anybody explain why this was done? _

Debian init.d script problems

This IS going to cause problems with EVERYONE's init.d script that are using the 1.2 version
https://github.com/tripflex/plexmediaserver-init/blob/master/plexmediaserver#L20
which is the version being packaged with the debian repo ... so someone tries to manually update without updating their init.d script, it will not work!

How is start.sh used?

Can anybody explain when/how the start.sh file is used/called? It's been a while since I dug into these files and can't seem to remember the flow, as I know right now the /usr/sbin/start_pms is called with the init.d script.

Versioning System??

going from 0.9.16.6 to 0.9.17.2 I assumed it would be a minor revision and there wouldn't be a ton of changes, especially with specific file locations, but it seems i was wrong .. can anybody please explain the Plex versioning system used?

What causes "Server settings unavailable"?

Second, is there a specific reason that after completing the upgrade I kept getting the error that Server settings unavailable ?? I've never seen this before and it's completely odd to me that accessing my server from the local IP I am getting an error saying that my server settings are unavailable ...

Where are my server settings stored at??

I backed up my Preferences file and made sure that was the one being used, but it seems no matter what I tried to restore from backup this is a constant error I kept getting. Once I finally launched from the Plex.tv site, it showed a notification saying I had an "Unclaimed server" that needed to be claimed .... Yes permissions were set correct, yes ownership was, yes my /etc/default/plexmediaserver has all the correct information.

Basically it looks like I lost all of my configuration (transcoding options, debug logging, etc) ... where is this information stored at on my local server? I have an entire backup of all Plex files so I don't see how after trying to restore from the backups I could never get any of the settings restored??

don't want plex to have permission on other folders

I'm just beginning with linux and have read how to handle the permissions on linux filesystems, but running into the problem that I can not stop the plex webservice (ran by the plex user) to have access to other folders then my media folders. For example my download folder.

I followed the official installation instruction for Ubuntu. Which gives me a plex user that runs the plex processes. The plex user is member of the following groups:

groups plex

drwxrws---+ 4 downloadclient downloadgrp 4096 nov 27 16:26 Downloads

The I check mij download folder that has the following owner, group and modes enabled:

Ls-l

drwxrws---+ 4 downloadclient downloadgrp 4096 nov 27 16:26 Downloads

Then I open the plex webgui from another computer and notice that the gui still has access to the download folder.

When I remove the mode settings for the group (so that the group does not have any permissions) I notice the plexwebgui can not access this directory.

What do i need to do to stop plex from accessing directories when its neither owner nor a groupmember of that folder and other users don't have permissions?

An insecure media server has been found on your network. Reload app insecurely

I recently backed up my entire "Application Support" directory, redeployed a newer version of Ubuntu Server and restored my backup. At the same time, I changed the plex "run as" user and the location where the "Application Support" directory is stored via the systemd service config file. Everything is working great except now when I access Plex via "https://app.plex.tv/web/app" I see an orange banner displayed across the UI indicating that "An insecure media server has been found on your network." When I click on the "Reload app insecurely" link the browser is redirected to my internal IP address and the banner is gone. I"m trying to figure out the cause and how I can resolve this. Any ideas?

LG TV - Not seeing PMS

$

I have been connected between Plex and my LG TV quite happily for a year or so now, but all of a sudden my LG TV has completely lost visibility of the Plex Media Server...
As a matter of interest I can also no longer see the PMS via my Samsung TV either!
The server is running quite happily - I can still see the server on my PC and remotely on my iPad and iPhone.

Any help would be most appreciated, as I have exhausted my personal knowledge of rectifying this problem - and I thought I understood the process fairly well...but obviously not!!!

Thanks in advance.

R-pi3 partial update scan not running on folder change.

I'm running my R-Pi3 as a PMS. With Raspian lite install.

I've connected my NAS media folders to the pi using NFS links in fstab (I had a similar set up on my desktop which worked perfectly).

I've noticed that the R-Pi3 will not do a scan when I add media to the NAS folders. I have to either manually run a scan or wait for the scan to run (I've set for 2 hours between scans). I've made sure it's set to do a partial scan on folder change, but it's not happening.

Any ideas on what to try? Or am I stuck doing manual updates?

Do Plex have an active connection to their own server?

I have a Ubuntu server with Plex on my local network at home. My router have an open port for Plex.

Question:
Do Plex make tcp/https connections to another server(their own)?

I recently discovered an unknown Foreign Address using netstat on my server. It's an https connection going to a server at: 82.94.168.56, it's located in the Netherlands.
Is this Plex doing it's thing or do I need to take some action here?

I have PMS running on Raspberry PI 2!

There is a Synology release which works on rPI2 without a chroot.  However it's seems to becapable of playing media that the drobo/chroot version was unable to.  If you want to try it:

See the guides here: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/145717-i-have-pms-running-on-raspberry-pi-2/?p=887965

and here: http://www.htpcguides.com/install-plex-media-server-on-raspberry-pi-2/

There's also a conversion guide for moving from the chroot version to the native version here:

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/145717-i-have-pms-running-on-raspberry-pi-2/page-17#entry886641

UPDATED Image using the ARMv7 install: http://www.mediafire.com/download/dred4bd078wwe9n/MiniBianPlexArmv7.zip

And it was surprisingly easy!

I followed the bitbucket guide for installing the drobo PMS into a debootstrap chroot on raspbian.

As described here:

https://bitbucket.org/inkubux/cubox-i/wiki/Plex%20Wheezy

As with the Mycloud install, I had to change LC_ALL=C in the chroot plexmediaserver script and install libexpat1 (apt-get install libexpat1) in the chroot.

I'm using a WD MyBook to store my media. So once I had PMS running I created media folders in the chroot and then mounted the mybook folders in the main host. So my main host /etc/fstab looks like this:

# Chroot bind mounts
/home            /chroots/wheezy-armel/home            none bind 0 0
/mnt             /chroots/wheezy-armel/mnt             none bind 0 0
/tmp             /chroots/wheezy-armel/tmp             none bind 0 0
/proc            /chroots/wheezy-armel/proc            proc defaults 0 0
/dev             /chroots/wheezy-armel/dev             none bind 0 0
/dev/pts         /chroots/wheezy-armel/dev/pts          none bind 0 0
/mnt/USB_HD/Video/Films /chroots/wheezy-armel/media/films       none bind 0 0
/mnt/USB_HD/Video/3D_Film       /chroots/wheezy-armel/media/3dfilms     none bin d 0 0
/mnt/USB_HD/Video/TVShows       /chroots/wheezy-armel/media/tv  none bind 0 0

Then I just add the chroot version (e.g. /media/tv) from the Plex GUI.

Last thing to do was to add samba so I can add/remove files from a windows host.

Thread limits per plextranscoder process

$

Looking to experiment with performance tuning on my 6c/12t linux system. I have noted a single transcode process can spawn 63 threads. When the server gets loaded threads are competing and I would like to see if I can use some of that cpu to transcode instead of scheduling threads and work load. Is there anyone to accomplish this?

Here is what I teased out of the transcoder binary.
-threads ED.VA... set the number of threads (from 0 to INT_MAX) (default 1)
auto ED.V.... autodetect a suitable number of threads to use

I don't think the default 1 is being used however it's also not being set in the command line.

Xbox one suddenly unable to play videos (though i can cast content) - possibly server related

I'm cross posting this from the xbox one forum as i'm not certain if its the client or the servers fault:

So, after starting up my xbox this morning i'm suddenly noticing that i cannot play any video content on my Xbox at all. However all other platforms work fine. As a bit of background i have a HP microserver running centos 6 and android and xbox clients
After selecting a video to play ( i have tried originals in multiple formats) i just get the generic playback error screen.

Before posting here i updated plex to the latest version on my CentOS server - this did not change anything.

As far as i can tell the relevant log entries are here:

so seemingly i cannot direct play this (which i believe the xbox one should be able to do), and for some reason its transcoding is not working (though i am able to play on mobile platforms using transcoder) - would anyone be able to share some insight here - i have also attached a snippet of the logs at debug level as this may help.

Also one thing that confuses me

appears every time i attempt to play the file - despite the fact that his is a different server on the same network

Thank you ^^

Good hardware for a headless Plex Media Server based on Ubuntu

I have at home a Plex architecture consisting of:

  • a NAS storing all my videos
  • a mini-computer used as Plex Media Server based on Ubuntu
  • a PS4 to play the videos
I am regretfully encountering some lags with the most detailed videos (1080p) and always need to convert them to 720p to play them. I am therefore considering the purchase of a new hardware to install my Plex Media Server (with Ubuntu)

Would any of you have recommandations

  • in terms of CPU, RAM
  • or predefined configurations like Intel NCU?

Thank you

Metadata not downloading for some TV Shows.. TLS error in logs

Metadata is not downloading properly for all TV Shows on a new server.
Movies are working properly but 1/3rd of my TV Shows are not pulling posters and other metadata.

com.plexapp.agents.thetvdb.log has numerous TLS errors

I've tried clearing the cache for the plugin under /Plugin Support/Cache/com.plexapp.agents.thetvdb and forcing a refresh. The exact same shows are still missing posters.

[Debian - Jessie 8.6]: Newly added files are automatically marked watched

I am having an issue with Plex Media Server 1.3.0.3059 on Debian - Jessie 8.6.
I use my plex to follow several series and movies. Up until recently ( maybe 2-3 updates ago ) everything was fine.

However lately I have noticed that newly added items, for example a new episode of a series I am following that airs weekly or a newly added movie, is being added as if I have already watched it. It is fairly annoying since I now have to manually check if there are new episodes available. Is this a setting I have missed?

Would love some help!

Kind regards,
Yoxxius

Unclaimed after reboot ubuntu

I have just installed plex on a fresh install of ubuntu 16.04 lts. I plan on moving my media from another box to this one once it is working. But everytime I restart the pc plex is back to unclamied.
It remembers my login but doesn't sign in untill I manually click sign in or claim server.

Any idea how to fix this. I am also using it as a steam streaming pc.

Running Plex Media Scanner via command line from Synology NAS

After finally getting Media Scanner to run without errors on DSM 6 it doesn't return anything. Running it with -l does not give me a list of section ids. Using other actions with specified correct section ids does the same.
I also tried to start Plex Server myself instead of having it done via the Synology Package Center. I can see the process in top but none of my clients is able to find it. I don't if I have to provide any arguments. `--help`` is not returning anything.

Any ideas?

After updating to 1.3.1.3102, I get "There was a problem signing in" when trying to log in

After the update, I tried accessing plex externally and got a message that said "Plex is not reachable." So I logged in through my local network, and signed out of the server, thinking maybe I just needed to sign in. After logging out, I started getting the message "There was a problem signing in." when I press sign in. Any ideas what happened?

Plex Media Server for Debian

UPDATED 28 April 2016
New key for the server please update by
sudo curl http://shell.ninthgate.se/packages/shell.ninthgate.se.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -

I have also removed the squeeze repo. (NOTE it still works on squeeze but change squeeze for wheezy in /etc/apt/source.list.d/plexmediaserver.list

Another thing I have added to the repo is Jessie (IF JESSIE IS RUNNING SYSTEMD).
This is just the ordinary Ubuntu package provided by PLEX.

Origninal modified post --->
Plex Media Server Repo for Debian

Hi.
We have decided to lock the other Debian thread and start a new one so I can edit the first post since Origin is no longer and has not been maintaing this package for a while.

All credits goes to Tobias and the other at Plex for PMS and the init script for Debian were made by Origin. I have just taken all there work and efforts and repacked it for Debian since the ubuntu package is not compatible since the change to upstart.

Down here is the instructions for installing PMS from my repo. This packages is for now compatible with Debian Squeeze , Wheezy and OpenMediaVault 0.3 , 0.4

First Time install

sudo apt-get install curl

If you are running Squeeze,Wheezy or Jessie with SYSVINIT
echo "deb http://shell.ninthgate.se/packages/debian wheezy main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list

if you are running Jessie with systemd
echo "deb http://shell.ninthgate.se/packages/debian jessie main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list
sudo curl http://shell.ninthgate.se/packages/shell.ninthgate.se.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install plexmediaserver

Upgrading

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

The init script Original by Origin with a minor modification by me

#!/bin/sh
