Indirect access only for PLEX server on Linux (Mint 18.3) and Roku 4 on same network

$

I have a Linux Mint box that I installed Plex on. That seems to be working fine. I have a Roku 4 in the other room that can see the Plex server but only indirectly. Both are on the same WiFi network, although one is on the 2.4 Ghz band and the other on the 5 Ghz band.

I haven't been able to find a reason for why the Roku Plex client can't see the local server. Anybody have any ideas on this?

The router is an AT&T U-Verse BGW210-700.

Ubuntu 16.04 Plex Stops Playback "buffering" and Never Resumes

This problem has only started in the last couple of days. I'm getting horrible playback issues to my computer via the browser (I've tried Chrome and Firefox). A movie will play fine for about 5 minutes and then will "buffer" but actually does nothing. The process CPU usage goes to near zero when this happens and network usage on my adapter goes to near zero as well. Its like it just gives up.

Plex Version: 1.12.0.4829

Roku clients can no longer find server after an upgrade

I recently updated PMS on my Linux machine to v1.12.0.4829 and none of my Roku clients can find the server. I thought I had verified everything after I updated, but now I'm thinking I may not have. (I rarely use Linux Plex since PMS 0.9.9 running on my old XP box loads MUCH faster on my older Roku devices.)

When I open the PMS desktop app on the Linux server and navigate to Settings/Devices/Roku, the Roku devices show current activity (presumably when I attempted to access Plex). However, the Plex client app reports 'no server', and when I click on that, it tests the connection and reports 'server is not accessible'. In other words, the server can see the devices but the devices can't see the server. I manually entered the server's IP address but that didn't help.

Assistance would be appreciated!

[BUG] Hardware acceleration not working after update

PMS running on CentOS 7 on a Mac mini (2011).

After I did a yum update, I noticed the video quality was **** (AppleTV wired to the same GbE-switch as the server).

Found this in the logs:

Mar 18 22:02:04 pms sh: Failed to wrapper hybrid_drv_video.so
Mar 18 22:02:04 pms sh: libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
Mar 18 22:02:04 pms sh: libva info: VA-API version 1.0.0

Mar 18 22:02:04 pms sh: libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/dri/i965_drv_video.so
Mar 18 22:02:04 pms sh: libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_1_0

Turned off Hardware acceleration and the issue (log) disappeared. Quality was good again, with the "small" problem of Plex punishing the CPU (300+%) when transcoding.

PMS 1.12.1.4885 no server settings

Hello,

I use above PMS on docker on a manjaro host. Since the update to the new 1.12.1.4885 version od PMS I cannot access Server Settings anymore. Is this a known bug or is there some thing wrong with my installation?

Greetings,
Stefan

Why is Plex transcoding this?

Why is Plex transcoding "H264 to H264" and "AAC to AAC"? That makes zero sense.

There should be no transcoding required. As best I can tell, the file should be compatible with a Roku Stick:

plex not using all available network bandwidth

$

Hello,

All of a sudden my Plex server isn't using all the available network bandwidth for streaming. As an empirical observation only half of the 100Mbps wired link is used, roughly somewhere between 5-6 MB/s out of the max(theoretical) 12.5 MB/s. My Plex has been using all the bandwidth (10-11 MB/s) for month before this issue - I've been noticed it when rewatching a 4k remux (60-70 Mbps bitrate) which played very smooth in the past, but now stutters buffering every 5-10 sec. Has anyone experienced this issue so far?

My setup below:
Server: latest Plex ARM64 version available from https://dev2day.de for RPI3 - wired network 100 Mbps, 4TB USB Hdd storage
Device: XPLAY (direct play/stream, no transcoding) on LG 55EG920V - wired network 100 Mbps
Network: wired 100Mbps cat 5e router/switch

I can copy files (scp/smb) from RPI3 at ~10 MB/s and a speed test on the TV's browser gave me almost identical result. On the RPI3 I measured the bandwidth with speedometer and the CPU never rose above 25% during streaming.

As a conclusion the TV and RPI3 can transfer at 10 MB/s, but Plex only streams at half that speed.

King regards,

Check for Update --- Not working anymore

Hello and apologies if this has been answered - I looked through the forum and didn't see the topic. My check for update icon shows green as up to date all the time, yet there have been versions update available on plex.tv - I used to get a notification stating that new updates were ready - I am a plexpass member and have been since the very beginning... Does anyone know what I may have disabled or whether it's a bug? Thanks.

[Guide] Plex Media Server with Intel NUC and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

$

0

HARDWARE

  • Intel NUC (BOXNUC7I5BNK, i5-7260U 2,20 GHz, Link)
  • 2 x 8GB DDR4 RAM (CT2K8G4SFD8213, Link)
  • 250GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (Samsung 960 EVO MZ-V6E250BW, Link)

This hardware setup is meant to be an allrounder. Fast enough to transcode multiple movies at the same time, almost completely silent in order to run it in the living room and power efficient in order to run it 24/7. It is able to hardware transcode three H.264 1080p movies at the same time with ~30-35% CPU load. Transcoding a single H.265 4K HDR movie has ~35-40% CPU load.
If you are looking for a single user setup this NUC might be overkill, the NUC i3 with 2 x 4GB RAM should be fine then.

Step 1: Install Ubuntu

  • Update BIOS with latest from Intel's website
  • Install Ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64bit server version
  • Use the following partition scheme (ESP size was suggested by Ubuntu, swap size is much bigger than usual because of RAM transcoding):

    #1: 536MB, ESP, bootable
    #2: 64GB, swap
    #3: 185,5GB, ext4

  • Setup user named plex

Step 2: Install Plex Media Server

  • Add plex repository as source

    • echo deb https://downloads.plex.tv/repo/deb/ public main | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list
    • curl https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-keys/PlexSign.key | sudo apt-key add -
  • Install Plex Media Server + dependencies

    • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install avahi-daemon avahi-utils plexmediaserver
    • During installation you will be asked if you want to override the plex repository source with the one from the package. Select yes.
  • Re-enable plex repository source

    • By default the plex repository source from the package is disabled (commented out), enable it in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list

Step 3: Setup NFS and Autofs

  • Install dependencies

    • sudo apt-get install autofs nfs-common
  • Create mount directory and configure Autofs

    • sudo mkdir /data
    • sudo nano /etc/auto.master
    • Append the following line at the end of the file:
/data /etc/auto.data
  • Create Autofs configuration file for data directory
    • sudo cp /etc/auto.misc /etc/auto.data
    • Append all your mount points at the end of the file, for example:
movies -fstype=nfs4 <ip-of-your-nas>:/volume1/Movies
music -fstype=nfs4 <ip-of-your-nas>:/volume1/Music
  • Restart Autofs

    • sudo systemctl restart autofs
  • All your mount points are now available at /data/...

  • Autofs will automatically unmount all mount points if there is no access within 5 minutes and remount if you try to access the mount point. You can keep ghost references to the mount points by adding --ghost in auto.master at the end of the appended line

Step 4: Configure Plex Media Server

  • Open http://<ip-of-your-server>:32400/web in your browser and configure your server

Step 5: Setup RAM transcoding

  • Create transcoding directory

    • sudo mkdir /tmp/transcoding
  • Setup the system to mount the RAM disk on every boot

    • sudo nano /etc/fstab
    • Append the following line:
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,nosuid,nodev,noexec,size=64G,mode=1777 0 0
  • Grant writing permissions for the transcoding directory

    • sudo chown -R plex:plex /tmp/transcoding
  • Use /tmp/transcoding in Plex Media Server > Settings > Server > Transcoder > Temporary directory

Additional notes / tips

  • In order to update plex media server it is enough to run the system update: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
  • If you setup a DDNS service for your server consider to configure the Ubuntu firewall. In that case please check out the Plex reference for which ports you need to allow

Command Line Examples

After adding new media to my library, I use Plex Media Scanner from the Linux command line and it works flawlessly. However, I would also like to run "Optimize Database", "Clean Bundles" & Empty Trash" for ALL Libraries. Is it possible to run those 3 extra commands from the command line and what would those commands be? I do not see any documentation for this. Please note I am only looking to run the commands on all Libraries, not individually. Thanks in advance

Remote Access for Linux Mint

I have recently moved my Plex Library from a Windows machine to a newly-installed Linux Mint box and all works great except for Remote Access. I had RA working perfectly with my Windows machine (so I understand the IP and port mapping requirements), but after updating my router with the new internal IP address, no joy with Remote Access. I get a brief flash of green 'Successful' setup when clicking 'Retry', then back to 'Not available outside your network' message.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Similar Experiences?

How can I really, actually disable video thumbnails?

I'm still getting log entries like this:

Creating /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Media/localhost/6/195aeca90feed752deeff7fb432c17d18a7b243.bundle/Contents/Thumbnails/thumb1.jpg (50.0%, 720x512).

... and lots of extra file reads.

I've disabled the setting globally, and per-library.

Ubuntu hard drives

I had to reinstall Ubuntu on a new HD this weekend. My content (movies, music & tv shows) are on 2 other drives. I can't figure out how to get plex to see the drives when I reconnect them. they have the same mount points it looks like but there is a long extra string of chanters in the names that wasn't there previously, see the top of the attached picture.

Any chance of official support of a rolling release?

My goto pms is fedora but this requires a reinstall with each fedora upgrade. I have the arch linux package installed and i am quite happy with it. I also have the fedora plex rpm installed in tumbleweed.

Any chance of official support of a rolling release?

Plex not matchin title by IMDb link; Due to no entry in The Movie Database?

$

I have a "movie", which is more like a collection of music videos, that was released in a collection called "'Weird Al' Yankovic: The Videos" released in 1996. It doesn't seem to be matching up, despite having an honest-to-goodness page in imdb.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168453/

However, there is no entry for it in The Movie Database. Is there any way I can force this match? Entering the IMDb title link seems to do nothing.

[CentOS 7] Progress on all episodes in a show locked together

$

Hi, I recently started having a strange problem with Plex Media Server 1.12.0.4829-6de959918 running on CentOS 7.

Basically for one particular show, I can't set watch progress for any particular episode without it setting that progress for all episodes of that show.
E.g. if I set one as watched, it sets them all as watched. And the progress bar is the same for all episodes.

The show is only one (64 episode) season and the folder structure is "TV Shows/Show Name/Season 1/" with all the episodes being in the Season 1 folder.

As far as I can tell, no other shows are having this problem. IIRC I also had the problem before the latest PMS update I installed so I'm not sure it's something new that's been introduced.

Anyone know what could possibly cause this? Thanks

A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server.

I try update/reinstall to the version 1.3.3.3148-b38628e in a Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS

Including manually deleting the directory /var/lib/plexmediaserver/ AND ~/Library

The only error message presented is indicated above, and the forum did not release the option to add the logs
