I am running Plex Media server on Ubuntu 16 desktop. It's working great. But I have a notification that an "Update is available. Please install manually" . Now what do I do ?
If it involves command line entries, please be pretty specific and detailed.
Thank you very much.
Manual Updates
Plex hardware transcoding in a VM
I'm posting this just for reference in case someone else is facing similar issues. I got inspiration from a bunch of other forum posts, and pieced it together, and finally got it working.
I run Plex on an Ubuntu server running in an ESXi VM. The hardware is an Intel NUC6i3. I have added the Intel HD 520 graphics adapter as a PCI passthrough device to the VM. When issuing the command lshw -short I got the following:
/0/100/17/0 display HD Graphics 520
So the device was present in the VM.
When I started playing some media no hw acceleration was taking place, and the Plex log gave me this:
ERROR - [FFMPEG] - Failed to initialise VAAPI connection: -1 (unknown libva error).
DEBUG - Codecs: hardware transcoding: opening hw device failed - probably not supported by this system, error: Input/output error
I had two drivers loaded:
/dev/dri/renderD128
/dev/dri/renderD129
By using ffmpeg from CLI I found that renderD128 gave me the same error as in the Plex logs and renderD129 worked. So I guessed that Plex used the wrong device.
ffmpeg -threads 1 -i file.mkv -vaapi_device /dev/dri/renderD129 -vcodec h264_vaapi -vf format='nv12|vaapi,hwupload' file.mp4
Then I deleted all references to the svga device in the vmx-file of the VM, and then added the parameter:
svga.present=FALSE
Disable and then reenable HW acceleration in the Plex UI, and it worked.
Hardware Transcode (Optimize) & Multipart films - bug?
I recently got a copy of Grindhouse on BluRay which splits the whole presentation into the two titles. Ripped with MakeMKV I went to create a 720p "Optimised for mobile" version for travel viewing.
With hardware transcode on the conversion status page shows negative ("-1%") progress and only completes the first source file. Switching off hardware transcoding and it works OK.
PMS 1.12.0.4829 on Linux Ubuntu server on an i7 mini PC.
I tried to locate the right logs for transcoding but the only ones I found were the stats logs.
Am now re-testing with LOTR Fellowship Extended edition - which worked fine with the same settings a year ago before I used h/w transcoding.
This server is unclaimed and not secure
Once a day when I try to access plex I get "The server "Plex-v2" is unreachable. Make sure it's running, double check your network, and try again." When I log on the server directly I see "This server is unclaimed and not secure" I then claim the server and it starts working again. Why does this keep happening?
Deleted filed from Plex Server still showing up in Plex Player
Hi,
I'm stumped, I'm currently running server version 3.31.1
I've duplicated this issue on two Xbox One's and my PC Plex Media Player.
The files on the server have been deleted... However, these are still showing in the player(s). I've emptied the trash, re-scanned the library, cleaned the bundles and optimized the database... I'm at a loss.
Here you can see the player view, it shows the files with no cover image and when entering there is no information and obviously, the file won't play:
On the server, these files are not present:

udev CD detection in Ubuntu
Has anyone here had any success using udev under Ubuntu to detect when an audio CD is inserted? There's a few pointers that come up when you google it but I can't get my machine to do anything.
I'm ultimately trying to get the server to rip cds automatically on insert (using ripit, which is fantastic btw) and then add them straight to my plex library. However for the time being I'm just trying to get it to respond to the udev event by echoing a comment to a text file.
My CD drive is a USB one which mounts in /dev/cdrom.
I've created a file named 99-autorip.rules in /etc/udev/rules.d and chmodded it to 777 for good measure. It has the following content:
KERNEL=="cdrom", ACTION=="change", RUN+="sudo echo CD_inserted >> /etc/udev/rules.d/udev.log"
i've done sudo udevadm control --reload
And when I open and close the CD tray, not a sausage.
Anyone any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance. (Not a VM or docker container etc.)
(This is ever so slightly off-topic, but I thought the good folk here would be the sort of people who would have tried what I'm trying to do.)
Plex buffering on Clients
Hi there. So recently My Plex Media Server have started buffering very often on clients. Computer / Chromecast etc. My Plex Media Server is in a remote location, so streaming happens over the internet.
It can play fine for 30min, and then suddenly it starts bufffering for 5 sec, then plays 1 sec, buffers 5 sec plays 1sec and so on. I have attached the logs.
how do I get plex to see my files without running the server as root
I installed the server on ubuntu 16.04 and the server starts fine but adding a library and specifying a folder fails to discover any files unless I run the server as root
How can i fix my plex or howto add plex to apt

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, PMS soft hangs/locks up after a while
Good evening!
Have been having some issues lately(last month or so maybe more) with Plex Server just freezing up, it becomes unresponsive but it doesnt actually crash. But it becomes unreachable on the local LAN and outside. Something is going on and i need some help figuring out what. Attaching the the server log. I've scimmed the log myself and can see some issues regarding the sync.
OS: Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS
PMS Version: 1.10.1.4602 (issue didn't arrive in this version)
Steps to reproduce: unknown, happens randomly as far as i can tell. Sometimes after one week sometimes after shorter.
Steps to solve: restart Plex service
I run PlexPy and it said that Plex became unreachable at 13:35, so around that time in the logs is probably where the useful information is....
Any ideas, pointers?
Duplicate Movies, No Duplicate Files
I recently changed to Ubuntu Linux for my Plex Media Server for reasons that are too in-depth to go into here. However, I am having an issue where I am seeing duplicate entries for a LOT of my movies. However...I do not have duplicate files in the movie folders (or extra files), all movies are in one folder on the share, and I didn't have this issue on Windows. My files are stored on a Netgear ReadyNas and shared through a CIFS share.
Any ideas?
Plex stops playing media randomly after starting. on random files.
Good morning,
Not sure if this is the correct spot or not. I apologize if it isn't. so at approximately 734 am and 741 am on March 4th my media stopped playing. here I've attached the logs. I have tried watching movies at home on a Vizio tv that I am casting to. randomly in playback, it stops playing. I was casting from my laptop, I notice that soon after it stopped playing my server was "unavailable" for a couple seconds then it came back. (rather strange) yet, yesterday we watched a movie at my in-law's house no problem. I'm currently attempting to watch that same file here now at my house, local to the server. and there we have it, it just stopped playing 755, 756 am. I've tried looking at the logs to try and figure out what went wrong, but there are so many logs I'm not entirely sure which one to look at. If you would like more information just ask and ill provide it.
Thank you,

[Ubuntu 17.10] Really weird shenanigans with folder scanning
PMS Version 1.12.0.4829
It started off with a few movies that I wanted to add external subtitles (.srt) files to. I moved the subs to the proper folder, like countless times before, using the normal syntax:
movie.mp4
movie.en.srt
And the movie is loaded, but PMS reports 'none' for subtitles. I've tried force refreshing metadata and force scanning the library and nothing changes.
So next thing I tried to do is rebuild the library by making a new library called "Movies2" and using the same directory as the original library. It reports "There are no items in this library" while the original library is still working perfectly fine. So my semi-educated guess would be something is borked in the folder scan code.
Testing this, I tried renaming one of the problem movies (removing the screen resolution from the file name) but low and behold, PMS caught the change and cleanly followed it. Tried to rename the subtitle with the same naming convention and it still failed.
Plex Media Player for Linux Desktop
Is there a version of Plex Meida Player avail (or upcoming) for Linux Desktop, Debian 9 (Stretch amd64). I have tried to install openPHT and AppImage but encountered overwhelming dependency problems, mostly versions not available for Debian 9. Running PMS on home server with six TVS served on the network, each with its own Dell Optiplex machine running Debian 9 as well. Have mpv installed on my test machine with every codec known to man, trying to install PMP to no avail. Various trancoding problems now, using PMS as player. Any word on a release of PMP for us Debian Stretch users?
TVDB metadata errors
Hello.
I have some troubles with TVDB metadata. I found out that fresh episodes of Gotham (S04E14) and X-Files (S11E09) didn't get any descriptions. After performing the 'Plex Dance™' i managed to get Gotham to work, but X-Files don't want to. In TVDB plugin logs i see things like this:

Does anyone know what to do with that?

Transcoder crashes if you pause and resume with subtitles on
We're those people, we watch subtitles on everything. Often, since about the last year or so, we'll have to pause a playback for some reason or another and upon resuming we cant get past either 13% or 33% without the transcoder crashing unless I turn off the subtitles and then the file will play fine. I can restart it from the beginning with the subtitles on, and it will work, but not resume with them on. Restarting and fastforwarding also does not work, its just like a pause and .
I did some searching but it turned up alot of forums and reddit posts with p[eople complaining about this, but there being no real solutions beyond: dont pause once playing.
I would vastly appreciate any assistance on this issue. I can tell you it did this on my first server, now the new one, over several updates, regardless of subtitle format or video file container.
[Ubuntu 17.10] Repo not available
After upgrading my server to Artful, the repo stopped working. I guess I should have waited a bit more and someone is already working on it, but just in case:

Hardware Transcoding with AMD Cards?
Is it possible to use the feature of hardware-based transcoding with AMD cards? I'm thinking about buying an AMD WX 3100 for my server and use it for transcoding. Everywhere only Intel and Nvidia are described as working, but what about AMD?
ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID when connecting with domain name
Hi,
I'm trying to connect to my server, but I'm unable to if I use my domain name. I get NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID
I've tried several browsers, but it makes no difference.
If I connect using the server's ip, it does work.
I've created a pcks12 certificate file using the following command:
openssl pkcs12 -export -out /etc/letsencrypt/live/home.macroscian.com/certificate.pfx -inkey /etc/letsencrypt/live/home.macroscian.com/privkey.pem -in /etc/letsencrypt/live/home.macroscian.com/cert.pem -certfile /etc/letsencrypt/live/home.macroscian.com/chain.pem
Of course, there's read access to certificate.pfx and I've made sure the password is the same.
In custom certificate domain I typed in: home.macroscian.com
Secure connection is set to "Preferred".
On Chrome, Firefox, Safari I cannot get past it. On Opera and Brave, I can, but that's not the point, because there's still a security issue and I expect it to work like before, i.e. before I reinstalled the whole OS and plexmediaserver implicitly.
So the problem is that, when connect to my own server, I get the wildcard certificate for *.plex.direct, instead of the certificate for my own server.
What's going on exactly? How can I fix this?
Success (kind of) running PMS on the Raspberry Pi Zero
Hello everyone, this is my first post. Nice to meet you all I managed to get PMS running on the Pi Zero (Headless) with a few issues. This project was a lot of fun and gave me a great reason to dive much deeper into Linux than I normally would. I will try to share everything I can, and hopefully others can give some tips and or insight. I'm sure I made some silly mistakes along the way and I am quite new to Plex. I forgot a few details after working on this for 4 days. I will try to remember everything and edit the post. But, this should give people a great starting point. It is important you use the correct architecture !! armel !!
Bill of Materials:
-Pi Zero -64GB MicroSD SanDisk -TPLink Nano N Wifi
-Raspbian Lite Jessie -http://plex-downloads.s3.amazonaws.com/0.9.6.1/PlexMediaServer-0.9.6.1-51848b3-Linux-ARM.tar.gz
- https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/armel/libgcrypt11/download
- Setup Raspbian Lite on SD Card.
- Configure Wifi, Network Interfaces and Turned off HDMI.
- Overclocking the Pi optional, but helpful. I clocked mine at 1Ghz
- First boot, SSH in.
- Modify sources list (/etc/apt/sources.list) and add these:
deb [arch=armhf] http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/ jessie main contrib non-free rpi
deb [arch=armel] http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security wheezy/updates main - apt-get update
- wget this: http://plex-downloads.s3.amazonaws.com/0.9.6.1/PlexMediaServer-0.9.6.1-51848b3-Linux-ARM.tar.gz and unzip it to a directory of your choosing
- apt-get install this: libgcrypt11:armel
- remove localization entries from start.sh
- run start.sh as root( yeah I know, it will not seem to load properly otherwise)
- Monitor the command output to look for errors, not all of them will stop things from working.
- http://IP:32400/web/index.html in browser and wait for the web interface to appear.
- it is very out of date. Let it update through the web interface. I am really surprised this did not break something.
- In the web interface, select you media directories.
- Add you files and let Plex find everything.
- At this point you should be good to go, minus a few issues.
For me:
1. Video playback and Transcoding of 1080p mkvs works fine using DLNA with VLC media player on iOS.
2. Video playback and Transcoding does not work in the browser (Error: Device is not powerful enough to transcode stream) Chrome: Debian/ Safari: OSX
3. The Pi shows up just fine in the iOS Plex Client, but when you select to view a library of videos, the application crashes back to the iOS home screen with no errors on the Server or Client.
4. The pi had no issues streaming the 1080p mkv, transferring a 5gb file via ftp and re-indexing the Plex library at the same time.
Good luck everyone
