Hi

Up till recently my setup was working all fine, then last night suddenly I couldn't access my server.

I'm running what i think is the latest version.

Accessing via Plex.tv .... i get server unavailable and nothing in the logs, when i try to go direct, it takes a while, but i then get the same error, but the logs show the following:

Meltdown / Spectre fix for Linux kernel significantly impacting performance?

So I'm running Plex on an old CPU (i7-870) with Ubuntu Server. Despite the aging hardware, it's always worked fine and can transcode a couple of streams no problem. However in the last few weeks, I've been seeing weird performance issues, such as the poster art being slow to render, or not rendering at all. I did some troubleshooting, such as optimizing the database, exporting / reimporting it etc, tuned the EXT4 parameters for the drive that the thumbnails and other meta data reside on and even moved the Plex database to a partition on a SSD. However it was still not working well.

Eventually I remembered that Ubuntu would have pushed out Kernel patches for the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, and I knew that the fix for Intel CPUs as old as mine potentially had a significant impact on performance. So I disabled the patch and rebooted and performance seems to be back to normal.

Has anyone experienced this at all?

Hello,

Been having this error for a while now, and really not too sure on how to solve it. The error comes up at random places and on all my files, sometimes it goes away for a month and other times will come up every couple of minutes.

I've attached my log files.

Thanks

Error transcoding to FLAC

When I set the transcoder to flac/flac it creates invalid output.

When I set my music profile output to container="flac" audioCodec="flac" the transcoder works but the .ts files generated are invalid.
I tested one of them with ffplay and the output is:

PMS for CentOS 7 Enabling Intel QSV HW Transcode (SOLVED)

$

Hello everyone, I have been struggling for a few hours to get my new i5-8400 Coffee Lake CPU PMS server build working with HW-accelerated transcode. I was a long time Ubuntu server PMS user but ran into some issues with SSHD so decided to give CentOS 7 a try. After a default install I still had no HW encode. I read through some posts here and found that the Linux kernel could have something to do with it. The default kernel was 3.10. I found this handy article and upgraded the kernel. After turning off the Linux firewalld service, I got Plex up and running after reboot, then voila, I got the magical "HW" suffix in my server status. BTW, Tautaulli is a handy PMS monitoring tool from another server.

Convert from Apt-Get installed Plex Server to Snap

I'd like to simplify the install and have it also do automatic updates using snap. But I don't want to lose anything.

Is there any tricks or can I just apt remove and then install with the snap and get everything back?

Thanks!

Continually Scanning Music Library

Version 1.12.1.4885 / Linux Ubuntu

I have been a long term PMS user for many a year with no complaints - until now. I have a lot of content, including a large collection of MP3's. This music library rarely changes. Yet, PMS since the last update, is continually scanning my music library.

I have disabled the Library > "[ ] Include music libraries in automatic updates" and also put it down to "daily" ... yet this is not stopping the scanning from continuing. I have rebooted the server many times (something I have rarely had to do) and still it continues to fill up log files.

There is nothing sinister in the log files, no slow-log performance issues, nothing that would suggest something is wrong.

"Double" identical files in Get Info, Plex shows dupes and Empty Trash doesn't help

PMS Version 1.12.3.4973 on Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS

Been having a weird one recently - Plex shows duplicate files (which it often does when TV episode quality is updated) but normally when I Empty Trash, the duplicate marker goes away. Now it doesn't, and if I check Get Info for the file it shows two, identical file names/paths. So far the only way I've found to fix it is to rename the file, empty trash (which removes the episode completely) and then rename the file and rescan.

PMS behind Apache Proxy

Where to find config file
I would like to use the web interface of Plex behind a proxy/proxyreverse of my Apache server.

It allows me to use only one port and some restrictions for a lot of web applications.

I used to put this in my apache conf :

<Location /plexmediaserver>
ProxyPass http://localhost:32400/manage
ProxyPassReverse http://localhost:32400/manage
</Location>

But for PMS, I need to configure it to use /plexmediaserver as root web url.

Where can I configure this ? And change the default port in the same way ?

Thanks a lot

I have also removed the squeeze repo. (NOTE it still works on squeeze but change squeeze for wheezy in /etc/apt/source.list.d/plexmediaserver.list

Plex Media Server Repo for Debian

Hi.
We have decided to lock the other Debian thread and start a new one so I can edit the first post since Origin is no longer and has not been maintaing this package for a while.

All credits goes to Tobias and the other at Plex for PMS and the init script for Debian were made by Origin. I have just taken all there work and efforts and repacked it for Debian since the ubuntu package is not compatible since the change to upstart.

Down here is the instructions for installing PMS from my repo. This packages is for now compatible with Debian Squeeze , Wheezy and OpenMediaVault 0.3 , 0.4

First Time install

sudo apt-get install curl

If you are running Squeeze,Wheezy or Jessie with SYSVINIT
echo "deb http://shell.ninthgate.se/packages/debian wheezy main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/plexmediaserver.list

If you are using Jessie with systemd then use the Ubuntu package from plex and you will get their repo.

sudo curl http://shell.ninthgate.se/packages/shell.ninthgate.se.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install plexmediaserver

Upgrading

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

The init script Original by Origin with a minor modification by me

#!/bin/sh

I'm using ubuntu 17.10.
Had an accident, and lost power for a second, so the server was shut down not so safely.
Since then PMS wouldn't start.
Tried to reinstall it, but it seems installation won't finish also.

EAC3 Audio Files not playing on iOS, Android, Chromecast and Plex Web

Running PMS 1.12.3.4973 and have noticed files with EAC3 Audio (Stereo or 5.1) won't play on certain clients (iOS, Android, Chromecast and Plex Web), but they play on Apple TV.

I've deleted the Codec folder - it's regenerated itself - but these files still don't play.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

I've tried reading through a few guides to no avail

My smb config is as follows:

[TJStorage]
comment = TJ Share Area
path = /mnt/storage
writable = yes
avaliable = yes
browsable = yes
read only = no
guest ok = yes
public = yes
locking = no
strict locking = no
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777
force user = andrews
force group = plex

My fstab mount config is:
//ThomasJefferson/TJStorage/Volume_1 /mnt/GW cifs credentials=/home/andrews/.smbcredentials,noserverino 0 0

I tried this on the file server side, after adding the plex user:

# Give user plex group access to the files
chgrp -R plex /nas/dvr
chown -R your_linux_username /nas/dvr

# Give yourself (the owner) and plex permission to write and set permission persistence
# ("ug+s" means "add persistence for user and group ownership")

find /nas/dvr -type d -exec chmod 775 {} \; # You and Plex have write permission to the directories
find /nas/dvr -type f -exec chmod 664 {} \; # You and Plex have write permission to the files
find /nas/dvr -type d -exec chmod ug+s {} \; # Permission persistence for you and plex is enabled.

Hello,
I am trying to change the user on another ubuntu machine in plex media server, it refused to change my user.

I want to completly remove plex media server from ubuntu and everything assosciated with it. I followed the steps at(https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/)
I ran
sudo service plexmediaserver stop
then
I was not able to remove the directory Remove the directory /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/ , as it was owed by the plex user.

Can someone please tell me if they know how to remove that directory .

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

With thanks,

Steve

TV tuner card relocated on the PCIE bus.

I had to move my Tuner card to a different PCIE slot. Plex now sees it as a new card. is it possible to realign what I assume is PCI bus slot being changed? or is it just faster to re-setup all the channels?

Thanks!

Python code fix to sync with Banshee and maybe other media players

$

Greetings!

I've recently made the switch on a 1k album music library to migrate from the evil Windows iTunes to Banshee media. As part of this migration, I had to fix a whole lot of missing cover art, but I was finally able to create a completed collection that I could sync to my phone without having to missing art. Since I went that far, I figured the new directory structure and album covers would be great to sync over to my Plex Server for ease of distribution to other players in the house. To my dismay, I found that all of the album pictured wouldn't import properly, even when using local media artist agents.

After looking through the forums, I found the culprit. Banshee and my android player used a file called "AlbumArt.jpg", and Plex used "folder.jpg". My first thought was to just link the files, so it will work with whatever system I sync'd the library to. Before I scripted that fix, I decided to look under the hood and just see what your agents look like.

So on to the request. I would prefer to not modify the Plex scripts every time an update comes out. Instead, I would like to see an entry added to /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Plug-ins-f38ac80/LocalMedia.bundle/Contents/Code/config.py. Modifying the line to POSTER_FILES = ['poster','default','cover','movie','folder','albumart']

While this solves 1 player issue, I started wondering about other players, and what names they might use. So maybe this would be better served as a "settings" option for the server, where a user can go in and add custom file names that they have in their library. The current scanner just doesn't have any real options to customize.

Looking for feedback and thought from other users out there. I'm sure I'm not the only person who replicates their library to multiple locations.

Thanks!

Plex Server not working on any other device then the server

My plex will not connect to any device whether on my network or outside of my network, it was working last night fine, I just updated it yesterday so I tried reverting back to an old version however that didn't fix it either, I have also done service plexmediaserver restart, along with an entire restart of the computer. I have it port forward on the router, and even tried throwing it into a DMZ. I am on Ubuntu 17.10 if that matters. I can't figure out why it isn't working on any other device or user. Help
